Effective June 2009, The Tobago Information Technology Limited and the Tobago Emergency Management Authority (TEMA) have partnered with mobile providers Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) and Digicel to establish an Emergency Messaging System (EMS) that now informs residents of, and visitors to, Tobago via text messaging/alerts on their cell phones of any emergency situation that has, or will occur e.g. hurricane, earthquake, flood, chemical spill, etc. Since the initial message is constrained by a 160 character limit, more detailed information and updates can be accessed by calling the 211 Contact Centre.
